Engineered Wood vs. Luxury Vinyl Planks

Both systems deliver premium visual results, but differ in composition, waterproofness, and environmental suitability. Compare features below:

Feature Engineered Oak Wood Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP/SPC)
Composition European Oak top wear layer on cross-ply Birch plywood core Stone Plastic Composite (SPC) limestone core with vinyl wear print
Waterproofness Moisture-resistant (suited to lounges/bedrooms) 100% Waterproof (highly suited to kitchens/bathrooms)
Scratch & Wear Moderate resistance (can be sanded & re-sealed if scratched) Very high (minimum 0.55mm commercial wear layer)
Underfloor Heating Fully compatible (birch core distributes heat evenly) Fully compatible (stable stone core does not warp)
Underfoot Sound Solid wood resonance (best glued with elastic adhesive) Acoustic rubber underlay absorbs impact sound up to 22dB
SPC Rigid Core Technology

Luxury Vinyl Performance Engineering

Engineered to provide wood-look beauty with industrial strength resilience.

SPC Limestone Composite Core

Featuring a solid limestone-PVC composite core that is completely waterproof, preventing plank swelling or separation when exposed to moisture in kitchens and bathrooms.

Acoustic Sound Dampening

We lay high-density acoustic rubber membranes below LVP to absorb impact sound and block multi-story noise transmission, providing a quiet underfoot feel.

Sub-Floor Prep

SANS 10070 Standards & Concrete Preparation

Timber and LVP installations fail when sub-floor concrete preparation is ignored. In compliance with SANS 10070 code of practice, we verify that concrete moisture levels are under 3.5% (or 3% for solid timber). If moisture exceeds this, we apply a high-build epoxy moisture barrier primer to isolate vapor transmission.

We use industrial planetary diamond grinding equipment to profile concrete screeds, opening the pores and ensuring a flat surface within a 2mm level tolerance over 3 meters. This guarantees a flat, squeak-free timber installation.
